Fans should give Maurice a chance

Posted December 4, 2008

Just a few weeks ago I was joking with a co-worker that Paul Maurice was available if the Hurricanes decided to make a coaching change. Well, here we are. Judging by the majority of comments posted by fans on this website, this is not a good move for the Hurricanes.

Comments ranged from “This is a horrible decision” to “makes me sick to my stomach. I will no longer support this team.” to “JR is an idiot! Paul Maurice is horrible! U just lost a lot of fans.”

Well, those fans had no problem cheering their heads off on the way to the 2002 Stanley Cup Finals. Bad coaches don’t lead teams to the Stanley Cup Finals. Sometimes a change in command is needed to right the ship and that’s what the Hurricanes' brass decided to do.

After coaching the Canes, Maurice landed on his feet behind the Toronto Maple Leafs bench. They don’t just hand coaching jobs to anybody in Toronto. I know, I know, -  he was dismissed there as well, but coaches in towns like Toronto are always on the hot seat, and it's win the Cup or you’re out.

I wanted to see what the Canadian fans were saying about the Canes' move and it was polar opposite of fans here. Nothing but support for Maurice, wishing him well, hating that he was fired in Toronto, saying he's a class guy.

Make no mistake about it, the guy knows hockey. You may not have liked his system pre-lockout, but you use the system best suited for the players you have. The team is better equipped for offense now, and this is the new NHL. It is safe to say that you will not see the 2003 Canes on the ice.

Let’s see how it all shakes out before we throw the team under the bus.

Passion is great in sports. Take that passion and fill the seats at the RBC Center and support the team. If the empty seats continue to fill the building, it might be minus a tenant.

Agree mostly but the guy who keeps callng for Wallin needs to actually sit in the arena for a couple of games. (I have only missed 3 this year and seen 2 away games). Wallin has played well and does have a physical force which is lacking.

Gabs will never come here because he wants $10M. Not worth it. We need forwards that actually play defense and can close the gap. (watch the redwings)

This team needs a lot but if I can sit through 2003/2004, I can sit through this.

We will give him a chance - ONLY till the end of the year to turn this around. if not, bring a coach in hear that is high profile and EFFECTIVE! Get rid of Wallin, Babchuck and Melichar. Make a three for one trade with the Wild (bring in Gaborik - we need a superstar scorer/playmaker - like a Semin or Thornton)
