Pack's OT win over Miami sounds familiar
Jan 27, 2009
A year ago it was Gavin Grant’s steal. Now it’s Julius Mays’ three-pointer.
History really does repeat itself. And you have to wonder if Miami coach Frank Haith wants to skip his next trip to Raleigh.
Two games, two dramatic overtime victories – and they’re only separated by one year and eight days.
NC State needs more home games against Miami.
On Jan. 19, 2008, Gavin Grant stole an in-bounds pass and hit a layup with two seconds left to give NC State a 79-77 win over the Hurricanes.
Fast-forward to Jan. 27, 2009. The ‘Canes and ‘Pack once again battle into overtime, only this time a freshman, Julius Mays, comes off the bench to hit a game-winning three-pointer.
The funny thing is, it took a freakish play just to get Mays into the game.
With 24 seconds left in overtime, Farnold DeGand fouled Jack McClinton behind the three-point-arc. McClinton hit all three free-throws to tie the game at 81. But the foul was DeGand’s fifth.
Had DeGand not fouled out, Mays might never have entered in the game.
Like Yogi Berra once said, it’s déjà vu all over again.
