Ty Drives Heels Past Duke
Feb 12, 2009
This was not a tough one to call. Everyone knew Ty Lawson was going to be a big headache for Duke’s defense. However, it did not get off to the smoothest of starts for the Tar Heels most important player. Lawson had only 4 points in the first half and the Tar Heels trailed by 8 at the break. In the second half however, Lawson as Roy Williams put it was more aggressive while being more patient scoring 21 of his game high 25 points in route to another Tar Heels victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Lawson once again showed why he’s the toughest guard at his position in the ACC when he’s got his game going. He patiently picked apart the Blue Devils defense in the second half with his drives to the hole. Lawson has a great combination of speed and strength in his game. This wasn’t the free flowing fast break style the Tar Heels are accustomed to playing when they break the century mark. Give Duke credit for not allowing the Heels to get too many easy fast break points (only 14 on the night), but they got an assist from the slippery surface at Cameron Indoor too. There were more stoppages of play to wipe the floor than TV timeouts. Probably just as well otherwise the game may have gotten out of hand quicker.
Duke just does not have the athletes to matchup to the Tar Heels in a fast paced game. After the game Mike Krzyzewski praised his team’s effort, but admitted they are not as good as the Tar Heels right now. He also could not stop praising the play of Ty Lawson, who had just dissected his teams defense the second half. UNC is now atop the ACC Standings and working their way closer to becoming the team everyone thought they were in the preseason. The only difference is the guy leading them there is not Tyler it’s Ty.
