Big East asserts itself as nation's best conference

West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins said earlier this season that the Big East, this year, was the best conference ever.

At the time, I was thinking "this guy is crazy." Right now, Coach Huggins looks like he was spot on.

It’s hard to judge which conference is the best in the nation. To compare the ACC to the Big East is a difficult task. From top to bottom one could say that the ACC is by far the toughest conference to play in. There is no easy game in the ACC with 12 quality programs capable of winning any night.

The Big East, by contrast, has four more teams in its conference with two or three doormats in the league. But the quality of the top tier teams are arguably second to none in the country. The top four teams in the Big East have 30 or more wins compared to just two teams with 30 plus wins in the ACC.

Like the ACC, the Big East has seven entries in this year’s tournament.

The Sweet 16 consisted of five Big East teams, and the Elite 8 was 50% Big East. Of the four other teams, the only ACC team left standing was North Carolina.

The Final Four, much like the Elite 8, will be 50% Big East, along with the Tar Heels and Michigan State. The percentages are in favor of the Big East, but the king of the hill won’t be crowned until next Monday

Oh and by the way, the Big East has the favorite to win the women’s championship as well in UConn.

Somewhere Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese has a smirk on his face.
