DURHAM, N.C. — Duke Director of Athletics Joe Alleva announced Friday that he has extended the contract of head football coach Carl Franks by three years.
Franks recently completed his fourth campaign as the head coach at his alma mater. Friday's agreement extends his contract through the 2006 season.
"As Duke continues to rebuild the football program, we feel it is imperative to have Carl Franks as its head coach," Alleva said.
"With any rebuilding process, continuity is a key factor, and extending Coach Franks' contract ensures Duke of having the right man in place to direct the program. Coach Franks has demonstrated the type of leadership that Duke needs in order for the football team to continue on the right path for success."
Duke ended the 2002 season Nov. 23 with a 23-21 loss to North Carolina after the Tar Heels' Dan Orton kicked a field goal in the final seconds.
The Blue Devils compiled an overall record of 2-10. Half of its losses were by five points or less.
