PITTSBORO, N.C. — Former North Carolina State University basketball player Marcus Melvin was arrested Monday and charged with trying to strangle his girlfriend, authorities said.
Melvin, 24, of 3101 Long Meadow Court in Raleigh, is charged with felonious assault by strangulation and communicating threats, authorities said. He was released on a $12,500 secured bond and is scheduled to make his first court appearance Wednesday, authorities said.
The charges stem from an incident last Tuesday, when a woman said Melvin got upset over a telephone bill, threatened to kill her and strangled her during an altercation, authorities said.
Melvin, a Fayetteville native, averaged 10.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game at N.C. State from 2000 to 2004.
