Yow Says Health Improving in Letter
Jan 5, 2007
In a letter to her supporters, North Carolina State women's basketball coach Kay Yow says things are looking up in her battle against breast cancer.
In a letter posted on the school’s athletic Web site, GoPack.com, Coach Yow says blood tests completed two weeks ago show a reduction in the number of tumor cells in her body. She credits her grueling chemotherapy treatments, her positive attitude, and God for her improved condition.
"I really consider this a miracle and a healing touch by God on my body,” Yow wrote. “I know that God is working through my oncologist, Dr. Mark Graham, as he decides on the amount of drugs he uses for my treatment."
In her statement, Yow said her cancer battle has been an emotional strain on her team and the staff, and the way they've persevered is a testimony to their character. Currently, the team is 11-4, and still very much in the ACC title hunt.
Yow will undergo another round of tests Jan. 15 to confirm the results. If that happens, she says she'll have a very good shot at returning to coach the Wolfpack.
Yow left the bench in November to begin her cancer treatment. It's the second time in two years the disease has taken her away from her players.
Yow admitted the next round of tests might not produce the results she wants, but she says it's wonderful to get the first test results back and see the numbers drop.
