CARY, N.C. — Virginia won its first Atlantic Coast Conference women's soccer championship Sunday, beating defending national champion North Carolina in Cary.
The Cavaliers won it on penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 tie despite 20 overtime minutes of play.
Virginia goalie Christina de Vries won it when she saved the Tar Heels' final shot attempt.
The Cavaliers will receive the ACC's automatic NCAA tournament bid.
North Carolina failed to win the conference title for the first time in 16 years.
