Reynolds Coliseum Floor Renamed In Honor Of N.C. State Coach
Feb 17, 2007
Raleigh, N.C. — It was a night to honor greatness, as the floor of North Carolina State’s Reynolds Coliseum was renamed in tribute to women’s basketball coach Kay Yow.
"I think tonight is a great time to give back to her,” said N.C. State athletic director Lee Fowler. “She's given so much to the university over all these years."
Home court is now Kay Yow's Court at N.C. State, in honor of the 32-year coach who recently returned to her team after cancer treatment.
"We all know that she's in her third occurrence of breast cancer, and she's really fighting,” said former Wolfpack player Kaye Cowher, wife of former NFL coach Bill Cowher. “I know that all of her former players had something to do with this."
"It may be a little bit past due,” Fowler said. “But these things only happen but once, and so to name a court after someone is very special, and she's a very special person."
The honor given to Yow was important to N.C. State basketball fans, who have watched Yow lead her teams to more than 700 wins
"That's just sort of icing on the cake,” said Wolfpack fan Sandra Dula. “It's a validation of what she means to the community, to the university, to the athletic program here."
"It just gives young ladies something that they can look toward, that women can look toward -- to set a goal and achieve that goal,” said fan Elizabeth Dula.
The Wolfpack women scored an emotional win in their last home game of the season, beating No. 2 North Carolina 72-65. Fans swarmed the court after the final buzzer.

ITs about time Kay Yow has done so much for womens basketball.NC STate did the right thing.
Why are the powers at State doing this now? Why not sooner? As far as Valvano, NCSU begged him to stay when UCLA courted him and then kicked him to the street after that book was published. After all of that, they suddenly became Valvano's best buddy after he was on the downswing. Made it look like Jim was a saint over there.
frankncsu, BS, I cannot believe anyone, especially a ncsu person, would ever say anything like that. I am amazed that you have so much knowledge of what other people care about. Kay Yow has inspired young women around our nation for many years through her basketball coaching. Now she inspires men and women who are fighting for their lives against cancer. I am a cancer survivor and I will bet Coach Yow would prefer never having cancer to being given this honor. I wonder frank do you feel the same about Jim Valvano?
Coach Kay Yow is a role model for ANYONE male or female who is fighting cancer. She never tries to focus attention on herself but uses that opportunity to focus it on everyone who is battling this horrible disease. What you see about Kay Yow is what you get--there is nothing fake or hidden--just a down to earth Christian special lady who loves everybody she meets and always finds something positive in every situation. I consider it a priviledge to have worked with her and to have known her for the past 15 years. She is truly first class in every way.
frankncsu....you are such a jerk! Kay Yow is awesome and a heck of alot of people care about women's basketball. It is the fact that Kay Yow has been such a positive role model for her players, the community and heck the whole nation. She is going to go down in the record books as the best coach for women's college basketball. I have met her several times in the past and she is such a down -to- earth person. I feel lucky to have met her. I've got some advice for you frankncsu, don't read about women's sports if you find it boring. By the way, I'd love to see you play one on one with a Lady Pack basketball player!
