Fayetteville, N.C. — Larry McClain, assistant head football coach and defensive coordinator at Fayetteville State University, died Friday in Dillon, S.C. at the age of 48.
The cause of death has not been determined, FSU officials said late Saturday afternoon.
McClain was a native of Dillon and was hired in 1999 by FSU Head Coach Kenny Phillips. During his tenure, the FSU football team won back-to-back Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 2002 and 2003 and was the CIAA runner-up in 2004.
“The FSU family is deeply saddened by the loss of one of its best coaches and friends,’’ said FSU athletic director Dr. Edward McLean. “Coach McClain was a respected coach among his colleagues at FSU and in the CIAA. He played a major role in helping build FSU into CIAA championship contender each year. His talents and professionalism will be sorely missed.”
A graduate of Western Carolina University, McClain’s coaching career began as a defensive line coach at Newberry College in Newberry S.C. He has had coaching stints at Oklahoma State University, Elon College and Murray State University.
McClain is survived by a wife and two children.
