Raleigh, N.C. — After slaying the Drexel Dragons in their den Tuesday night, North Carolina State University won the right to host a NIT game on its venerable home court: Reynolds Coliseum.
N.C. State plays its home games at the RBC Center, but a Josh Groban concert was already booked into the arena Friday night. So, university officials moved a gymnastics meet scheduled for Reynolds Coliseum to open the venue for the NIT basketball game.
Many fans thought the location was fitting, since Coach Sidney Lowe's 2007 Wolfpack team reminds them of the 1983 national championship team, which Lowe led on the court.
"I feel like Sidney Lowe definitely brought back what he brought to the court in '83," student Steve Gardner said. "For some of the alumni, it will definitely bring back memories, and hopefully, it will bring back the way basketball was at one point at N.C. State."
Lee Fowler, N.C. State athletic director, said he was glad fans will have at least one more home game to cheer the 2007 team.
"Looking back at the ACC Tournamen this year, it reminds you a lot of the '83 team, so it's nice to have them come back and play in front of their fans this year and show them the appreciation of what they've done down the stretch," Fowler said.
N.C. State officials said they expect the game to be sold out by late Wednesday -- before tickets were to go on sale to the general public.
