Durham, N.C. — With a crack of the bat and the roar of the crowd, the Durham Bulls will kick off the season Thursday night.
The Triple-A team will face the Syracuse Chiefs at 7 p.m. at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Some special guests will drop in for Thursday's opener. The 82nd All American Free Fall team from Fort Bragg will parachute into the stadium to deliver the ceremonial first pitch.
Also, new Durham Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo and the rest of the new coaching staff will be introduced to fans. Montoyo is the third manager in Durham's Triple-A history, replacing John Tamargo after one season.
Madeline Edwards, who won the CBS Early Show's Living Room Live Kids Edition contest, will sing the national anthem. Edwards performed live on the Early Show earlier this year. Now, the 11-year-old will sing in front of thousands at the ballpark.
Fans are in store for some new treats this season. The biggest involves the new and improved Blue Monster, which stands in left field and comes equipped with a brand new video screen. The old video board was demolished during the offseason.
The construction does not end with the Blue Monster. Hours before the opening pitch, a crane will place a 30-foot steel beam on the third base line. The beam marks the beginning of construction of Diamond View II.
Once complete, the five-story building will have views of the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, banquet and conference facilities. Diamond View I sits right behind center field.
