The Pawtucket Red Sox scored three runs in the eighth off of Bulls reliever Seth McClung (0-1) to overcome a 3-2 deficit and defeat the Bulls, 5-3 on a cold and damp Wednesday afternoon at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
McClung entered the game in the top of the eighth inning, but he got into trouble early. Pawtucket right fielder Brandon Moss hit a single to center to lead off the inning, then one out later third baseman Chad Spann then singled to right, followed by a walk to former Bulls catcher Kevin Cash. Center fielder Kerry Robinson then doubled off of the left field wall to score Moss and Spann to give Pawtucket a 4-3 lead. Joe McEwing's sacrifice fly plated Cash and ended the scoring.
Pawtucket pounded out 15 hits off of the Bulls pitching, including eight off Bulls starter J.P. Howell in almost six innings of work, though he allowed just two runs.
Paw Sox starter Devern Hansack kept the Bulls in check during the five innings he pitched, allowing just one unearned run while striking out 10.
The Bulls took a 3-2 lead off of PawSox reliever Mike Burns in the sixth. Designated hitter Joel Guzman drove in second baseman Jorge Cantu, who had walked earlier in the inning, and Ruggiano hit a double to bring Guzman home. Relievers Manny Delcarmen (1-0) and Craig Breslow, who picked up the save, did not allow any more to score.
The Bulls and PawSox will meet again on Thursday night at 7 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park for the series finale.
