Former Duke standout Larry Broadway homered, doubled and drove in four runs, as Columbus beat Jeff Niemann and the Bulls 5-2 on Tuesday.
Columbus took the lead for good in the first inning. Trailing 1-0 on Jorge Cantu's two-out single in the opening frame, Columbus scored took advantage of walks to former Bulls Brent Abernathy and Darnell McDonald. Broadway's two-out sinking line drive to left fell just out of Chris Richard's reach, scoring two to give the Clippers a 2-1 advantage.
After Columbus scored another two-out run in the second for a 3-1 lead, Niemann settled down, retiring 10 of 11.
Meanwhile, the Bulls got a run closer on Matthew Maniscalco's groundout in the fifth at 3-2. Scott Dohmann, who hadn't pitched in four days, came on in the sixth and allowed a two-run homer to Broadway after a Tony Batista single. Dohmann retired his next hitters and Tim Corcoran pitched a scoreless eighth. However, the Bulls were unable to bounce back as the Broadway homer closed the scoring.
Durham was held to five hits by four Columbus pitchers. Reliever Winston Abreu earned the win, while Chris Booker got the final four outs for his third save.
The Bulls, now 5-8, and 1-4 on an eight-game road trip, will try to bounce back at 12:05 on Wednesday as righty Andy Sonnanstine takes the mound for Durham.
