CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolina Panthers fans all over the state are gearing up for the NFC Championship game this weekend in Seattle. Some well-known names are willing to put some nice prizes on the line in hopes of a victory.
Gov. Mike Easley has bet Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire that the Panthers will beat the Seattle Seahawks in Sunday's playoff matchup. At stake is one pound of barbecue and sauce, one pint of slaw and hushpuppies from Wilber's Barbecue of Goldsboro and the Barbecue Center Inc. of Lexington, a six-pack of Cheerwine and a box of North Carolina peanuts. Gregoire countered the wager with an offer of a gift basket that includes smoked salmon, potatoes, cherries, Washington-produced wines and apples.

"The Panthers are on a roll and are playing great ball," Easley said. "When Gov. Gregoire ships that gift basket to me, I hope she sends it rush delivery so the first lady and I can enjoy these Washington treats when we cheer for the Panthers during the Super Bowl."
Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory has a wager of her own against Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels -- putting up a Bojangles' chicken tailgate pack with a gallon of sweet tea against Nickels' chicken dinner from Ezell's Famous Chicken and a pound of coffee. They also agreed the loser must wear the other team's jersey at a mayors' conference next week.
The Panthers are scheduled to leave Charlotte on Saturday morning around 7 a.m., and should be arriving in Seattle around 1:30 p.m.
The game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Sunday on Fox-50.
