(Pawtucket, RI) Durham finally got some run support for Jason Hammel (1-5), but couldn't hold the lead in falling 7-4 to Pawtucket at McCoy Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Durham, which had failed to score in Hammel's last four starts, took a 1-0 lead in the first on Ben Zobrist's leadoff homer, and then added three on catcher Shawn Riggans' long ball in the third. However, Durham also left seven on base in the first four innings, giving Pawtucket a chance.
The Pawsox began their rally in the fourth against Hammel, scoring on a triple by Alex Prieto and a David Murphy single. Then in the fifth, Pawtucket took the lead for good. After getting within one on former Bull Kevin Cash's second homer in as many days, Pawtucket tied the score with a two-out rally. Hammel, who walked four and hit a batter in the fifth, walked three straight, the last to Jeff Bailey tying the score. Hammel then left and Scott Dohmann allowed a two-run single to Brandon Moss that gave Pawtucket a 6-4 advantage.
Chad Spann homered off Dohmann in the sixth for a 7-4 lead. The Bulls got the tying run to the plate in the eighth but failed to score against Bryan Corey.
Jorge Velandia, Justin Ruggiano and Brent Butler each had two hits for Durham, which had ten hits against four Pawtucket pitchers.
The Bulls, who have lost two straight and five of six, take on Pawtucket on Thursday at 7:05.
