(Syracuse, NY) Dustan Mohr's solo homer in the top of the ninth was the cushion Durham needed on Monday in a 5-4 win over Syracuse.
Mohr's 4th homer this season gave Durham a 5-3 lead, right after Syracuse had scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it 4-3. The run proved to be crucial as Seth McClung walked two hitters to start the ninth. After getting the next two batters, Eric Kratz delivered an RBI single to left. McClung then buckled down to pick up his third save as John Ford Griffin flew out to left.
Durham had taken a 4-0 lead in the second, taking advantage of a leadoff walk and two errors against Michael McDonald (0-2). Mohr, Joel Guzman and Elliott Johnson delivered RBI singles, and Raul Casanova had an RBI ground out.
Syracuse scored just once in the first six innings against Mitch Talbot (3-5), who earned his first road win this year. Talbot had runners on base in five of six innings, but allowed only four hits, and also was helped by two double-play balls.
Durham, now 21-24 and 3-3 on an 11-game road trip, was led offensively by Mohr, who had two hits and two RBI. Jason Hammel starts on Tuesday as the Bulls look to win the series with Syracuse.
