Barton Hoops Star Named to Globetrotters
Jul 2, 2007
Wilson, N.C. — The hero of Barton College's basketball national championship was selected Monday to join the Harlem Globetrotters.
Guard Anthony Atkinson was picked in the first player draft ever held by the Globetrotters and is one of only five players nationwide asked to attend the team's training camp in October.
Atkinson called the selection an ideal fit for him, combining his love for basketball with his desire to mentor youth.
Atkinson's 10 points in the final 45 seconds of the NCAA Division II title game carried Barton to a 77-75 victory over previously unbeaten Winona (Minn.) State in March. He scored the winning basket on a layup as time expired.

The hits just keep on coming for Barton College and its 2007 NCAA Division II national championship basketball team. Congratulations and good luck to Anthony Atkinson. Just imagine, all of those years and all of those great players who have worn the Globetrotter jersey, and not one of them ever came onto the scene having accomplished what Anthony and his Barton College teammates accomplished in this year's national tournament. The ESPY will be great, but where this young man really belongs is on the cover of Sports Illustrated's final edition of 2007, the one in which they name the Sportsman of the Year.
Rock on 'Dogs; I get goose bumps every time the subject comes up, and I die a thousand deaths every time Anthony drives to the basket for that winning layup; could you please go back and shoot it just a little sooner!

How cool is that!!!! Way to go!
Congrats Ant! We are so proud of you, and we know if this is the route you decide to take, it's because you feel called by God to mentor. Wilson and Barton have both been blessed to have had you for all these years. You will always be our hero!
