Greensboro, N.C. — N.C. State women’s basketball coach Kay Yow has started a new round of chemotherapy in her long fight against breast cancer, but is feeling strong and confident as she continues working with her team in preseason drills.
“I feel good,” she said Tuesday at the ACC’s media day for women’s basketball.
Yow said she had been off chemotherapy for five months. She said the first drug she tried in renewed chemo affected the cancer, but was debilitating.
"I was beginning not to be able to walk, so that was not an option that I wanted," Yow said.
Both Yow and Wolfpack player Khadijah Whittington said Yow has been more active in practice this year.
“She has a lot more input than she had last year,” Whittington said.
Yow was at the Carolina Hurricanes game on Monday night when she dropped the puck for Hockey Fights Cancer night.
N.C. State was 25-10 last season in a remarkable year in which the team rallied around Yow’s bout with cancer.
"I don't think I'll ever experience another year as gratifying, no matter what.," Yow said. "I don't think a national championship would beat that."
State opens its season on Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. against UNC-Greensboro.
"I just praise the Lord that I'm able to be coaching this year," Yow said.
