Durham, N.C. — Duke junior Martynas Pocius will undergo season-ending surgery on his left ankle, the school announced Tuesday.
Pocius originally injured the ankle while playing in Lithuania over the summer and reinjured it in Duke’s 78-43 win over Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 25.
Pocius, a native of Vilnius, Lithuania, had a similar surgery on his right ankle at the conclusion of the 2006-07 season.
“This is a tough break for him and for the whole team," coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a statement. "He worked extremely hard over the summer to be ready for this season and was making a steady contribution to the team. His presence in practice and in games will be missed.”
The school said the surgery, expected to be performed in early January by Dr. Dean Taylor, will increase the overall stability of Pocius’ ankle. He should be full strength next season. The surgery will be done in January to allow the swelling to go down.
Pocius was averaging 4.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game. He opened the season with a 10-point, four-rebound, two-assist effort in Duke’s 121-56 win over N.C. Central.
