Ex-Major Leaguer Tommy Byrne Dead at 87

Former major league pitcher Tommy Byrne, known for his fastball and his fond memories of life in the major leagues, has died, Bright Funeral Home of Wake Forest has confirmed. He was 87.

Byrne, 87, had a career record of 85-69 and an ERA of 4.11 in his major league career.
He was born in Baltimore and played for Wake Forest College.

He quickly rose to the majors and has a long career, beginning with the New York Yankees. He later played for the St. Louis Browns, Chicago White Sox and Washington Senators.

Byrne had a good fastball in his career, striking out 766, but he also walked a whopping 1,037.

After finishing his career, he was was well-known figure in Wake Forest, always one to take time to discuss his days in baseball and players he knew like Joe DiMaggio.
