The Carolina Hurricanes' season suffered a stunning blow on Friday when the team announced right wing Justin Williams will have reconstructive knee surgery and will be out of action four to six months.
Williams suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee Thursday in a 5-4 loss at the Florida Panthers.
The surgery will be scheduled next week.
Williams, 26, has nine goals and 21 assists (30 points) in 36 games this season, and is tied for fifth on the team in scoring. Williams, a native of Cobourg, Ont., has 121 goals and 185 assists (306 points) in 458 career NHL games with Philadelphia and Carolina, and played in his first NHL All-Star Game in 2007.
Prior to Thursday's injury, Williams had played in 205 consecutive regular-season games for the Hurricanes from March 27, 2004 until Dec. 20, 2007, the fourth-longest consecutive games played streak in franchise history.
The Hurricanes play at Tampa Bay Saturday night .
