RALEIGH, NC- Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has recalled defenseman Casey Borer from Albany of the American Hockey League (AHL). Hurricanes defenseman Bret Hedican has been placed on injured reserve with a sprained right knee, retroactive to Dec. 28.
Borer, 22, is in his first full professional season after completing a four-year career at St. Cloud State of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). The Minneapolis, MN, native currently leads Albany defensemen in goals (5), points (14) and power-play goals (4), and is first among all River Rats skaters in plus/minus (+13) this season. Carolina's third selection (3rd round, 69th overall) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Borer totaled five goals, 36 assists (41 points) and 112 penalty minutes in 148 games at St. Cloud State. He was a two-time WCHA All-Academic selection and served as the Huskies' team captain during his junior and senior seasons, leading St. Cloud to a final ranking of No. 7 in the nation last year. Borer has twice represented the United States in international competition, at the 2003 Under-18 World Junior Championships and the 2005 Under-20 World Junior Championships.
Carolina hosts the Atlanta Thrashers on Wednesday night at the RBC Center (7 p.m., Versus HD, Hurricanes Radio Network), and fans who bring clothing for Goodwill to the Time Warner Cable Box Office at the RBC Center between now and game time on Wednesday will receive buy-one-get-one free coupons for tickets to that game.
