The Kent State guard called for an intentional foul on UNC’s Tyler Hansbrough insisted Wednesday that he wasn’t trying to whack the UNC star.
Al Fisher, a 6-foot-1 junior guard, was called for an intentional foul with 9:15 left in the first half when he hit Hansbrough from behind and knocked him down. The hard foul sent Hansbrough sprawling to the floor under the basket.
“I wasn’t trying to hurt him,” Fisher said. “I tried to hit the ball. I wasn’t trying to intentionally foul him.”
Fisher, who was booed by UNC fans the rest of the game, leaned over to speak to Hansbrough after the play, saying he asked Hansbrough, You OK?
Carolina coach Roy Williams was still miffed about the play after the game and said he is “getting tired” of Hansbrough being intentionally fouled.
“Everybody thinks it’s OK to break the guy in half,” Williams said. “I’m getting tired of it.”
Hansbrough is fouled at a rapid rate and has taken 138 foul shots already this season.
“I don’t know how many flagrant fouls there have been this year,” he said. “It seems like it’s more and more often. It happens to me on the fast break more than anything. …
“But I’m playing through it. It hasn’t bothered me like it has in the past.”
The best-known foul came when Duke’s Gerald Henderson was called for a flagrant foul last year when he broke Hansbrough’s nose.
Kent State’s Fisher, by the way, said he has never seen that play.
