Canes Claim Right Wing Samsonov from Blackhawks
Jan 8, 2008
The Carolina Hurricanes have claimed Russian right wing Sergei Samsonov on re-entry waivers from the Chicago Blackhawks, the team announced Tuesday.
"Sergei brings NHL experience to add depth to our forwards,"Canes general manager Jim Rutherford said.
Samsonov, 29, earned four assists and six penalty minutes in 23 games with the Blackhawks this season before he was assigned to the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League on Jan. 2 after clearing waivers.
Samsonov, 5 feet 8 and 188 pounds, has scored 178 goals and earned 244 assists in 619 NHL regular-season games with Boston, Edmonton, Montreal and Chicago. The Bruins originally drafted Samsonov in the first round, eighth overall, in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft with a pick acquired in the deal that brought defenseman Glen Wesley to the Hurricanes organization in 1994.
Also Tuesday, the Canes assigned forward Brandon Nolan to the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League (AHL). The Canes recalled Nolan, 24, on an emergency basis on Jan. 3, and he played in Carolina's games at Atlanta on Jan. 4 and at St. Louis on Jan. 5 during his second NHL stint.
The Hurricanes will be responsible for half of Samsonov's $3,525,000 salary for the remainder of this, the second season of a two-year deal he signed with Montreal in 2006.
Samsonov is a native of Moscow.

Not me - must be someone else...
To those who think he played well tonight - remember that he originally played for Boston and maybe there was a little extra in the tank. That and it was his first NHL game since his demotion. Set your expectations low and I guarantee he'll hit them.
He will be in the AHL or put on waivers before the season is over... take that to the bank.
I hate him.
Samsonov did an outstanding job this evening. He played smart, showed good skill, and displayed good technical ability during his shifts. I watched numerous times when he did just those little things to make the Canes night run just a little smoother. No complaint from his first game from me. Perhaps as he settles in with the team he might start taking some of those shots at the net. Good Pick up based solely on what I saw this evening.
I didn't realize this article was about NC state vs UNC basketball??? How about keeping to the topic.
I think he is going to work out good for the Canes. Heck at least we didn't have to give anybody up for him and he is a name we have heard of. Maybe he and Hamilton will play well together they are both from the Blackhawks.
