New Bern linebacker Kevin Reddick, who is considered one of the top prospects in North Carolina, has committed to UNC, InsideCarolina.com has confirmed..
Reddick, 6 feet 2 and 210 pounds, was a cornerstone of the Bears team that won the state 4-AA title. New Bern beat Charlotte Independence 28-17 in the championship game to end Independence's seven-year title streak.
Reddick was named first-team all-state.
Reddick's commitment is significant for UNC, which has lacked depth and talent on defense. The Tar Heels have been particularly deficient at linebacker.
His commitment also comes at a time when Carolina has been lagging behind other schools in its recruiting class. The Tar Heels, under coach Butch Davis, have targeted some of the nation's top prospects but have missed on several and are waiting on others.
Carolina has eight commitments so far, according to InsideCarolina.com. N.C. State, by comparison, has 19.
Schools generally sign about 20 prospects, but many of the top recruits wait until the final days to make a decision.
The UNC football program had 16 prospects at Saturday's N.C. State-Carolina basketball game.
