Butch Davis' Raise More Adjustment Than Addition

In November, North Carolina announced that Butch Davis had received a one-year extension on his contract in addition to an annual raise of $291,000. However, a closer look into the wording of the pact reveals that a majority of the money is composed of funds that were already written into the previous deal.

According to the contract, Davis will now receive an annual retention bonus of $157,000 for every year that he remains employed by the school. Previously, the retention bonus money was to be paid into two separate deferred compensation accounts and given to the coach after five (through January 2012) and seven years of service (through January 2014), respectively.

Davis was to receive $100,000 per year for the first five years and then $300,000 for each of the next two.

The remaining $134,000 of the raise come from an increase in his base salary of $29,000, an added $5,000 in his expense account and a $100,000 boost in supplemental compensation.

The other amendment to Davis' original deal is the inclusion of a bonus payment that would pay the coach two-months salary instead of one in the event that Carolina is invited to a post-season bowl outside of an ACC first or second choice non-BCS bowl.

Several key components of the salary remain, including the bonus of one-months pay that Davis receives if Carolina makes the ACC Championship Game and the the penalty he would owe the school if he left without cause, which ranges from $700,000 to $2 million dollars depending on the year.
