Raleigh, N.C. — NC State basketball coach Jim Valvano, saying he wants to spend the rest of his coaching career with the Wolfpack, signed a new long-term contract, school officials announced Tuesday.
Details of the contract, which was approved by Chancellor Bruce Poulton, were not announced, but it is reportedly worth more than $3 million over the next 10 years, making the Queens, N.Y., native one of the highest paid basketball coaches in the country.
Valvano, 36, has posted a 44-29 record since he was hired in March, 1981, including a 22-10 mark and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament last year. So far this season, when the Wolfpack has been without two significant players because of injury and illness, Valvano has guided his team to an 8-6 record. The Wolfpack has lost three in a row heading into Wednesday night's home game against Duke.
“I am delighted that Jim wants to be with North Carolina State for a lengthy period of time,” said NC State athletics director Willis Casey. “I hope this ensures that he will remain with us for the rest of his coaching career.”
