When coach David Cutcliffe was hired to be the head football coach at Duke University, his reputation for grooming quarterbacks, like the Manning brothers, preceeded him. However, some wondered if Cutcliffe's reputation would be enough to lure some of the nation's best passers to a program that has seen little success in recent years.
Sean Renfree answered that question Tuesday morning.
With his committment to the Duke football program, the four-star quarterback becomes the first marquee recruit brought into Durham by the new staff.
"They've got a great one," says Scot Bemis, Renfree's high school coach. "He's the best quarterback I've ever seen, much less coached."
According to Bemis, the 6-3 senior from Scottsdale (AZ) Notre Dame Prep has a quick release, a strong arm and a solid head on his shoulders.
"He makes great decisions and he's a great leader. He doesn't talk a lot, he's kind of mellow...but he's got that competitive fire and his teammates respond to him."
Bemis also credited Renfree with being a tough player, saying that his star signal-caller played the last seven games of the season while wearing a special shoe to protect a broken foot.
Renfree's coach said that the pro-style quarterback with the 4.5 second 40 time chose Duke because of the academics and coach Cutcliffe's ability to work with young quarterbacks.
Renfree becomes Duke's 16th commit for the class of 2008. He finished his junior year with a completion percentage of 56% while throwing for 2,483 yards and 25 touchdowns with only five interceptions.
