Ty Lawson is doing better but will not play against N.C. State on Wednesday night, North Carolina coach Roy Williams said Monday.
Williams, on the ACC teleconference, said he didn’t think Lawson was being overly cautious with an eye toward the future – that is, a potential NBA career.
“I don’t think that’s a factor at all,” Williams said. “We’ve never talked about that. He still has pain in the foot and the doctors are being cautious, which is what we should be.”
Williams said “we would be making a huge mistake trying to rush somebody to get back” when there are critical games ahead in the stretch run of this season.
“I don’t think it’s been in Ty’s mind one second that he’s trying to protect himself,” Williams said. “He’s trying to help the Tar Heels.”
Lawson has not played since suffering a sprained ankle at Florida State Feb. 3.
Williams said Quentin Thomas had a touch of the flu on Sunday but he said he expects Thomas to play Wednesday night at the RBC Center. He also said the team overall was healthier than the end of last week.
Asked if Lawson will return to the starting lineup right away when healthy, Williams said that could depend on how much he is able to practice.
As for Lawson not playing, N.C. State coach Sidney Lowe said, "Obviously we have to make adjustments on our personnel. But they've shown through the last couple of weeks that they are capable of winning without him.
"We have to prepare. They have guys on their team that understand what it means to not have a player of his abilities out there and they pick up their game."
