HAMPTON, Va. – St. Augustine's swept the CIAA basketball rookies of the year award on Tuesday, with Hayward Fain winning for the men and Allison Sikes winning for the women.
Fain, a 6-foot-4 forward, was named CIAA men’s rookie of the week five times this season, the most of any player. He is the fourth on the team in scoring at 10.3 points per game and grabs 6.2 rebounds a game.
Fain scored the game-winning basket to beat Elizabeth City State 75-74 on Dec. 1. He hit two free throws with 17 seconds left to beat Johnson C. Smith 69-68 on Jan. 22 for the Falcons, who are 15-8 overall. The Falcons, picked to finished third in the Western Division, are currently tied for second place in the division. They are 11-6 in the conference, which is fourth best in the CIAA.
Sikes, a 5-11 wing, was selected CIAA women’s rookie of the week five times, the most of any player. She is the Falcons’ leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 11.4 points and 8.3 rebounds a game. Sikes shoots a team-high 49.3 percent from the floor which ranks third in the CIAA. Her best game was a 33-point, 15-rebound outing in a 79-70 victory over Virginia State on Dec. 4, 2007.
The trio keyed a huge turnaround for a team picked to finish last in the CIAA Western Division this season. A six-win team last season, the Lady Falcons are currently 17-9 overall. Their 12-5 conference record is fourth-best in the CIAA.
The Lady Falcons filled three of the five spots on the women’s all-rookie team. The other players Teaunsha Robinson and Lakisha Walker of Bowie State.
