Canes Trade Ladd to Blackhawks for Ruutu

Raleigh, N.C. — The Carolina Hurricanes beat the trade deadline by a few hours Tuesday, shipping left wing Andrew Ladd to the Chicago Blackhawks for center-wing Tuomo Ruutu.

"Tuomo is a versatile player who gives the coaches more options at center or wing," Carolina President and General Manager Jim Rutherford said in a statement. "He's a hard-hitting and skilled two-way player who will complement our group of forwards."

Ruutu, 25, is in his fourth NHL season after the Blackhawks drafted him with the ninth overall pick in the 2001 Entry Draft. The Vantaa, Finland, native has scored six goals and 15 assists (21 points) and accumulated 75 penalty minutes in 60 games with Chicago this season. He has scored 48 goals and 66 assists in 228 regular-season games in his career.

Ladd was the fourth overall pick in the 2004 Entry Draft by the Hurricanes. He helped Canada win the gold medal in the 2005 World Junior Championship and was a key performer in the Canes' stretch run to the 2006 Stanley Cup.

Ruutu has represented Finland at seven major international tournaments, capturing four medals.

Looks like they really are selling the farm. This was a horrible trade. I wish Ladd well in Chicago- he will be missed.

Looks like the front office has made a crazy trade, again. Not too fond of Rutherford and his method of madness.

I thought Ladd was a great member of the team. I hope GM knows what he is doing!!
