N.C. State's Fowler Backs Lowe, Says Chemistry an Issue
Mar 5, 2008
Raleigh, N.C. — N.C. State currently sits in last place in the ACC in men’s basketball, a place not many would have expected when this team was 15-7 and 4-4 in the conference.
Since then, the season has been a complete struggle – a struggle felt by Lee Fowler, the Wolfpack athletics director.
"Winning is good, losing is bad," Fowler said Wednesday morning in an interview on 99.9 FM The Fan. "We've been very frustrated this year. You have high expectations, and I think the fans did, and we have not lived up to them. That's the huge frustration."
A team picked to finish third in the ACC now finds itself in dead last at 4-11.
Fowler said some Wolfpack players have been “probably a little more interested” in their own playing time and performances than in team objectives.
“Chemistry seemed to be a bit squirrelly through the year,” Fowler said.
He added, “And so it’s just been a battle throughout the year.”
But Fowler was encouraged by Saturday’s Duke game and is confident Coach Sidney Lowe can get the job done. Fowler brought in Lowe because Lowe knows what it takes to win a championship.
"I understand that it's all about winning and that's what we live in everyday, and when you don’t win, it's tough," Fowler said. "But we also feel like we have the things in place to win in the future."

As a Carolina fan I beleive Lowe deserves at least 4 - 5 more years to see whether or not his recruits can play based on his coaching ability.
Chuck Amato actually had an over all very successful record compared with\to other coaches at NC State. I believe he is like third in winning percentage after Sheridan and Holtz, but boosters and fans still ran him out of NC State.
Chuck did too much promising early on, and that is what I think was his downfall. No way was NC State going to win the ACC Championship and then an National Championship....that was a little far fetched.
Good Luck State, Give Lowe some more time before you can him!
I agree, Six String. State has a history of hiring coaches that were not previously "established" names in coaching. We hire cheap and we usually get what we pay for. We got lucky with Valvano and some others.
The jury is still out on Sidney. I say he gets one more year to show some IMPROVEMENT (not win the ACC, but show that he has righted the ship...) We went cheap and hired a guy with ZERO college coaching experience, so we made our bed and are now lying in it. Hopefully Sid will work out. I'm hoping what we're seeing is just the result of Herb's recruiting. If a miracle happens and J.J. stays put, Sid might have a chance. If not, State sinks even lower and he's probably looking for a job. I just hope we replace Fowler before we have to hire another basketball coach.
Come to think of it, Truthbeknown, he doesn't have a stellar hiring record so far, does he? I think the jury's still out on Lowe -- he'll need another year or two to do or die.
Lee Foulup needs to be fired. His only good hire was Tom O'Brien and he was the one that chose State, not vice versa. I believe he hitch-hiked to Raleigh with a sign that read, "NC State or bust!"
Fire Fowler and you'll see athletic improvement at NC State.
""Winning is good, losing is bad," Fowler said. Wow, let me write that one down. W-i-n-n-i-n-g G-o-o...."
LOL !!! This ranks right up there with "We would've won the game if we'd scored more points."
They'll get better, don't worry. This comes from an alum of a school that knows about basketball -- State won't ever be in the slump that Clemson was in for...how many decades?? All it takes is a good coach who knows how to recruit, just ask coach Oliver P.
