And KaroWHINA lost to Maryland AND DUKE. THAT'S the end of the story...
Mar 6, 2008
Raleigh, N.C. — More North Carolinians will be rooting for North Carolina to win on Saturday than Duke, according to a recent poll by Public Policy Polling of Raleigh.
According to the statewide telephone survey, 40 percent of respondents will pull for Carolina, and 24 percent prefer Duke.
The number who didn't care? A total of 36 percent.
"You would think based on the amount of attention that Duke-UNC basketball games get that more North Carolinians would prefer one team or the other," said Dean Debnam, president of the organization. "It's not surprising given UNC's broad alumni base in the state that it's the more popular team."
Public Policy Polling surveyed 969 North Carolinians on Feb. 5, the day before the first Duke-Carolina game.
In the 919 area code, which includes the Triangle, 43 percent of respondents picked UNC and 30 percent picked Duke. Only 28 percent said they don't care.
Of course, UNC has a much larger student body, and alumni base, in North Carolina than Duke.
And the bottom line? Unlike politics, those who respond to surveys don't get a say in who wins or loses. That's for the players and coaches to decide.
