Raleigh, N.C. — HONORING CARSON: Many North Carolina players wore T-shirts before the game honoring Eve Carson, the student body president who was murdered. UNC coach Roy Williams said it was senior point guard Quentin Thomas who suggested it. Carolina is still wearing the “Eve” patches sewn on the right shoulder.
EX-DEACON ON BENCH: That tall person in the blue shirt positioned behind the North Carolina bench on Friday night, and behind the Arkansas bench in the nightcap, was Raleigh police sergeant Phil Medlin.
The 14-year law enforcement veteran played at Wake Forest from 1989-92 under first Bob Staak, then Dave Odom. Following a few years of pro ball overseas, the North Carolina native returned home and joined the Raleigh police force. He is normally assigned to a K-9 unit.
Medlin, who still attends four or five Wake Forest games every season, enjoyed being close to the action at the RBC Center. "Good stuff," he said. "I get to watch the games and get paid for it."
Most wins record: Carolina has won 30 games in a season nine times. The Heels twice finished 34-4, in 1993 and 1998. The Tar Heels are now 33-2 - a national title gets them to 38-2.
THIS AND THAT: UNC point guard Ty Lawson has scored 20 points six times in his career, but never done it in the Smith Center. … Tyler Hansbrough has now made 713 free throws in his career, tying Duke’s Christian Laettner for the all-time ACC record. …
