'We, Not Me': How the Wakefield Girls Went 31-1
Mar 25, 2008
The Wakefield girls basketball team had a simple theme this past season – "We, Not Me."
That motto was the foundation of a remarkable year as the Wolverines finished 31-1, losing only to Fayetteville Westover in the East Regional championship.
WRAL.com photographer Ben McKeown followed their journey, and his pictures, along with their voices, combine for a remarkable essay on the value of high school sports.

What a great story, regardless of who won. I was moved to tears at the seeing how young women become sisters, despite their racial differences, through working together on a sports team. Ben, you did a great job of telling the story. I look forward to more stories from you.
I thoroughly enjoyed this presentation. It gives us a peek of how the participation in extra-curricular activities in high school adds so much to the education of a student. I hope that WRAL will continue to give us insight to today’s students. Congratulations to these young ladies, the managers and other support staff, the coaches, and the AD for making such a difference in lives of each other.
I have to admit that I was happy to see them lose to Westover, because I am a Westover alum. Go Wolverines!!!!!!!
What about a story on the Lady Wolverines? I'm a Westover Alumni. Way to go girls!!!
