New Orleans — Monday night, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill women’s basketball team takes to the court with a trip to the Final Four on the line.
The Tar Heels are ready to put on their game faces, and so are their fans, who have their own game plan against Louisiana State University.
“I’m just going to go out and yell and scream my lungs out,” said UNC fan LeMar Lucas. “Hopefully, they can hear me and hear the support of the North Carolina fans and the crowds.”
Lucas flew in from Las Vegas to cheer on his daughter, Italee Lucas. Leslie McFarland drove from Maryland. She knows their Carolina blue will be just a blip in the plethora of purple and gold.
“It’s probably 100 of us, compared to thousands of LSU fans, so our girls will just have to focus on the game,” McFarland said.
“(The UNC fans) are passionate, very passionate, and loud!” said LSU fan Anne Guidry.
The Tar Heel women say they're passionate, too, about making a third straight Final Four. If they do, it will be the first year Carolina has men's and women's teams sharing the honor.
“That was a little motivation, seeing the boys cut down the net and wear the hats. We’re trying to get there, too, so that’ll be a great honor,” Italee Lucas said.
“We’re going to keep out fingers crossed about the women tonight, and we are absolutely making plans in Chapel Hill. Staff is going full force for the men, and we’re ready for the women,” said UNC Athletic Director Dick Baddour.
