Three years removed from his first national championship, Roy Williams says he learned from that experience
“I was dumbfounded. I didn’t know what to do,” Williams said Tuesday of his reaction after Carolina won the NCAA title in 2005. “I was so paranoid about trying to work and work and work and not let anybody outwork me.”
Now as he takes another Carolina team to a Final Four, Williams plans to enjoy the ride – especially if that ride leads to a title.
“If it were to ever happen again, I would make sure my staff and Ol’ Roy take more time to enjoy it than I did the last time,” Williams said.
The seeds for this Final Four team were sown shortly after the last championship. Early departures by four underclassmen decimated the Tar Heel roster, but they opened the door for a talented recruiting class.
Led by a driven young man from Poplar Bluff, Mo., those freshmen had a chance to play immediately
“I felt, like right away, that I was forced to come into the situation where I saw a lot of playing time,” junior Tyler Hansbrough said. “And a lot of my teammates – Bobby [Frasor], Marcus [Ginyard] and Danny [Green] – saw the same situation.”
Those players are juniors now – and they have Carolina back in the Final Four.
