(Toledo, OH) Jon Weber had three of Durham's seven hits, but a Bulls rally fell short in a 3-2 loss to Toledo on Thursday night in the season opener for both teams.
Weber singled in the fifth to help the Bulls start their first rally and tie the game at one on Andy Cannizaro's double to left. However, Dane Sardinha homered in the bottom of the frame against Jeff Niemann for a 2-1 lead.
Toledo tacked on a run in the sixth against reliever Calvin Medlock for a 3-1 lead. From there, Medlock, Brian Henderson and Kevin Lynn threw 2.1 scoreless innings to keep the Bulls in striking distance.
In the seventh, Weber singled to start a second rally. Fernando Perez singled with runners at second and third and two out to score one run, but Cannizaro was thrown out by Jackson Melian at the plate, preventing the Bulls from tying the game.
Durham then rallied in the ninth against Blaine Neal as Weber and Hector Gimenez singled with two out to put runners at the corners. However, Neal got Cannizaro to bounce out to short to end the game.
Weber went 3-for-4 to highlight the Durham attack, while Cannizaro went 1-for-2 with an RBI double and two walks.
