Holtz would prefer 4-team playoff in college football

ACC Commissioner John Swofford and SEC Commissioner Mike Slive recently announced there will be no change to the current BCS format at least until 2015, and Swofford claimed the system was in "an unprecedented state of health."

One man who disagrees with the format is Hall of Fame Coach Lou Holtz.

Holtz joined Mike Maniscalco and Dan Mason on 99.9 FM The Fan on Monday after his recent induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.

"I would like to see the bowl games done by Jan. 1, then take the top four teams and have a playoff," said Holtz, who counted N.C. State and Notre Dame among his many coaching stops. "You can justify why LSU was champion last year but you can't justify why Georgia isn't and why Southern Cal isn't."

With recent news surrounding O.J. Mayo allegedly accepting cash while at USC, it brings up a question for which Holtz has strong opinions. Who should be held accountable for these violations?

Coaches, institutions or agents?

To find out what Holtz thinks about Mayo, and to hear his pep talk to Dan Mason's Pop Warner football team, you'll have to listen.

The Div I FCS series takes the top two out of each conference and they have no problem getting the playoffs done before Christmas. The only reason you have these stupid bowl games is because it makes people's wallets fatter. A lot of teams do depend on the money they rake in as well. Here is a scenario that should please everyone: Take Ken D.'s conf. champs and put them in a playoff, then have bowl games for other teams with good records (like the non BCS bowl games now). That way people's wallets get fatter, and you will have a TRUE national champion.

I agree with you Lou!

Any playoff system in which the participants are chosen by opinion will not produce a true national champion. IMO, all conference champs, and only conference champs, should be in a playoff. In that way, every team controls its own destiny, by winning on the field.

It would be nice to include some non-champions, as in basketball. But the need to play only one game per week simply makes that impractical. If only champions get in, the regular season really means something. And if you lose out of conference, it doesn't hurt your chances of qualifying, so you can schedule tougher teams. Let the cupcakes play each other.

There will definately be speculation as to whom should be in the "final four" of NCAA Division 1 teams......but there will be FAR less scrutiny that the current post season.....with who should play for the National Title.

A Final Four would be great, but there would be so much disagreement on who the #4 team would be. I'm sure teams ranked 5-7 would have some sort of case of why they should be #4 and in the tournament.
