Notre Dame athletics director Kevin White is leaving for Duke to replace Joe Alleva, according to two media outlets.
WNDU in South Bend, Ind., and The News & Observer of Raleigh are reporting White will take the position, which opened when Alleva left to become athletics director at LSU.
Duke is looking to improve its struggling football program and has an ambitious plan to update Wallace Wade Stadium and improve the program. White, at Notre Dame, obviously has experience with a premier football program but would face a substantial challenge in making Duke more competitive in the sport.
White is 57 and has been at Notre Dame since 2000. He is highly active in national issues and is credited with building up the Irish programs across the board.
White’s arrival at Duke would also have a bit of irony. When the ACC was expanding, Notre Dame and the league had conversations about the Irish joining but could never reach an agreement. Notre Dame has been reluctant to put its highly profitable football program in a league. The ACC eventually added Boston College, Miami and Virginia Tech.
