So who’s on top now – Duke … or North Carolina?
The Tar Heels learned Monday they have almost their entire basketball team intact from their Final Four run last season.
But Duke is packed with talent, too. The Blue Devils lose DeMarcus Nelson but Kyle Singler should be even better and the surrounding talent is strong.
Duke also has a pretty good coach, and on Tuesday, Mike Krzyzewski was asked what the UNC news means for Duke.
“We‘ve had teams where somebody probably smiled and said, Boy, they’re going to do it,’” he said. “I just think you concentrate on your team.
“In North Carolina’s case, they’re going to be really good no matter what. I wasn’t going into next year’s season thinking it was going to be easy, let’s put it that way. I’ve never done that at Duke.”
“I think you [the media] are allowed to speculate. It’s what you do well – or not so well. I remember when we lost a whole bunch of guys in ’99 and everyone speculated that we weren’t going to be real good. And we were No. 1 in the country. [Mike] Dunleavy got mono and then we lost but they may have been better.
“What I’m saying is ‘just because’ doesn’t mean that’s the way it’ll happen.”
