Posted January 7, 2014
Carolina Hurricanes forward Tuomo Ruutu and defenseman Andrej Sekera will compete in the Sochi Olympics for Finland and Slovakia, respectively, the team announced Tuesday.
Defenseman Justin Faulk was selected to the American team on Jan. 1, meaning three Hurricanes will travel to Russia for the tournament, which begins Feb. 12.
Ruutu, 30, has scored four goals and tallied eight assists in 38 games for Carolina this season. He was part of Finland's bronze medal team at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, and he scored six goals to lead Finland to the gold medal at the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship.
Sekera, 27, leads Hurricanes defensemen with seven goals in 2013-14. He has represented Slovakia in numerous international tournaments, including the 2010 Olympics and the 2008, 2009 and 2010 IIHF World Championships.
Hurricanes captain Eric Staal, who helped Canada secure a gold medal at the 2010 Olympics, was left off the roster for the 2014 games.
The Hurricanes return to the ice Tuesday for a road tilt against the Buffalo Sabres.
