Carolina Hurricanes forward Tuomo Ruutu and defenseman Andrej Sekera will compete in the Sochi Olympics for Finland and Slovakia, respectively, the team announced Tuesday.

Defenseman Justin Faulk was selected to the American team on Jan. 1, meaning three Hurricanes will travel to Russia for the tournament, which begins Feb. 12.

Ruutu, 30, has scored four goals and tallied eight assists in 38 games for Carolina this season. He was part of Finland's bronze medal team at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, and he scored six goals to lead Finland to the gold medal at the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship.

Sekera, 27, leads Hurricanes defensemen with seven goals in 2013-14. He has represented Slovakia in numerous international tournaments, including the 2010 Olympics and the 2008, 2009 and 2010 IIHF World Championships.

Hurricanes captain Eric Staal, who helped Canada secure a gold medal at the 2010 Olympics, was left off the roster for the 2014 games.

The Hurricanes return to the ice Tuesday for a road tilt against the Buffalo Sabres.

Ruutu is doing well for having 2 hip surgeries, but he's not up to his former level. We like him because he's one of the few on the team who's not afraid to finish a check.

Agreed. Congratulations to both Ruutu and Sekera. They are certainly deserving of this honor. Message to Canes management...Eric Staal was not selected to play for Canada. Many of us have been saying that his play has been lackluster at best. Maybe now someone will listen...

Apparently, Team Canada decided they could do without Eric's ill-timed penalties.

    Well stated, jscott13!!!

Just HOW could the Canadian Selection Committee NOT SELECT the Cane's CAPTAIN????? Maybe he isn't CAPTAIN leadership material......

I do not want to see Ric Flair's face at Hurricanes games anymore. He is siding for the San Francisco 49ers this weekend!!!!!!! Booooooooooo for him
