— The NC State softball team swept a doubleheader at Syracuse on Sunday afternoon with a dominating performance in the second game to defeat the Orange, 7-0. The game was called after the sixth inning when the clock approached 4 p.m. to accommodate travel plans for State.

The Wolfpack (23-10, 12-4 ACC) wasted little time taking the lead in the second game of the day, as junior Renada Davis led off with a double to right center and scored on an RBI groundout from Molly Hutchison. State added three more runs to its total in the top of the second to take a 4-0 lead.

“It was good to get a lead early,” said head coach Shawn Rychcik. “Emily [Weiman] got things going in the circle and we were able to get her some run support. We kept adding runs from there and Emily was dominant. When we play the way we did today, we’re tough to beat.”

Emily Weiman was terrific in the second game of the doubleheader, as she did not allow a hitter to get past first base. She collected eight strikeouts in the contest, did not walk a batter and only allowed five hits. It was the junior hurler’s 10th complete game shutout of the year.

Seniors Leah Jones and Chelsea Tate hit back-to-back singles in the second inning, before Scout Albertson laced a single through the left side to score Jones from third. Tate, who moved over to third on Albertson’s hit, scored on a sacrifice fly from Lana Van Dyken to make it 3-0.

After Davis walked, Kirsty Grant laced a single past the Syracuse (13-18, 6-7 ACC) third baseman to plate Albertson from third base and chase starting pitcher Lindsey Larkin. Christina Clermont came in to relieve Larkin and retired the next batter to escape the inning.

In the top of the fourth, Tate led off the frame with a double to deep center field that kicked off the base of the fence. She scored on Davis’ RBI single up the middle to make 5-0.

“I just wanted to step up for my team,” said Tate. “I’ve been struggling lately, so I was just trying to make solid contact and drive the ball.”

State tacked on two additional runs in the sixth when Jones singled to open the inning and Tate followed with a two-run blast that hit off the scoreboard in left field. It was her fourth home run of the season.

Tate led the team in hitting with three hits in three plate appearances, scoring three runs and driving in two more. Jones went 2-for-3 in the second contest to finish the day 5-for-7 with two home runs. Albertson, Davis, Grant and Van Dyken also tallied a hit in the game.

NC State will return to action at home on Wednesday, April 9 with a doubleheader against East Carolina. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. with the second game to follow.

GAME 1

The NC State softball team rallied to score four runs in the top of the seventh to register an 8-6 comeback win against the Syracuse Orange in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

“I’m really proud of our team and the way they battled back,” said head coach Shawn Rychcik. “We got down, but fought back to tie it up and take the lead. We were able to put four runs on the board in the top of the seventh after several good at-bats. I was real happy that we took care of business in the bottom of the inning to get the win.”

Trailing 5-4 heading to its last at-bat of the game, the Wolfpack (22-10, 11-4 ACC) plated four runs in the seventh to take the lead, 8-5. Sophomore Hanna Sommer smashed the first pitch she saw in her at-bat over the fence in left center for a two-run homer, after freshman Molly Hutchison walked earlier in the frame.

Two batters later, senior Leah Jones hit her second home run of the game and fifth of the season on an 0-1 pitch to stretch the advantage to 7-5. After a couple singles, senior Chelsea Tate lined an RBI single through the left side to score Albertson.

“It was nice to get on the field and play,” Jones said. “I was just trying to hit the ball hard to help the team and I got some pitches that I could handle and I hit them well.”

Sophomore Lana Van Dyken ignited the Wolfpack offense in the top of the third with a leadoff double to deep center field. After Syracuse retired the next two hitters in order, senior Kirsty Grant deposited an RBI double to left center scoring Van Dyken from second as the Pack knotted the score at one.

State took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth after Jones smashed a two-run homer to left center, scoring Hayley Stowe from first base.

“Leah [Jones] had a great day at the plate,” Rychcik added. “She swung the bat really well and just had a really solid day and we need that from our seniors.”

Jones drove in her third run of the contest on a two out single to center field plating Hannah Yeager, who pinch ran for Molly Hutchison after she was hit-by-pitch, from second base.

Syracuse’s (13-17, 6-6 ACC) Julie Wambold put her team on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second with a solo homer to center field. The Orange added four runs to its total in the bottom half of the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead, thanks in large part to a double to deep center field by Nicole Lundstrom, scoring runners from second and third base.

Junior Emily Weiman (19-8) pitched all seven innings of the contest to earn the win, allowing six runs on eight hits and striking out eight. It was her 20th complete game of the year.

At the plate, Jones paced the squad with a 3-for-4 performance highlighted by two home runs and four runs batted in (RBI). Van Dyken was 2-for-3, while Albertson, Davis, Grant, Sommer and Tate each had one hit.
