— North Carolina shut out Virginia 8-0 on Sunday to finish off the series sweep of the Cavaliers.
Kendra Lynch had two RBIs and combined with Lori Spingola for the Tar Heels' second shut out of the weekend as they improved to 21-16 overall and 12-5 in ACC play.

"I'm really pleased with how the team played this weekend," head coach Donna J. Papa said. "I thought we played outstanding defense, giving up just one run in three games. Amy Nece did an outstanding job up at the plate, and Jenna Kelly was really consistent for us and has come through with some big hits. Lori Spingola, Kendra Lynch and Lauren Batten were all really solid on the mound, and we just really put everything together and came out with three team wins.

"Coming out of the weekend, I feel really encouraged and excited about how we kept our poise and took care of business. I'm really excited about it and hope this gives us some momentum heading into Wednesday's doubleheader," Papa said.

Carolina exploded in the first inning, posting six runs on three hits to start the game. After three straight walks to start the first, Jenna Kelly singled through the left side to bring home Aquilla Mateen. Amber Parrish then reached on a fielder's choice as Amy Nece scored. Kati Causey then drew a fourth walk to force a run across the plate before Kendra Lynch hit an infield RBI single. Parrish came home when Tracy Chandless hit a sacrifice fly to right, and Erin Satterfield hit a final RBI single down the right field line for the sixth run of the frame.

Elly Wagner started off the third with a short infield single and then advanced to second on a ground out by Lynch. Satterfield then hit a hard single down the left field line to score Wagner to make it 7-0.

In the fourth, Kelly singled through the left side. Parrish and Lauren Fuller each drew walks before a third walk to Lynch forced Kelly home for the eighth and final run of the game, which ended after five innings with the eight-run rule.

Spingola, who tossed the complete game shut out in game one on Saturday, pitched four innings, giving up just two hits while fanning four. Lynch tossed the final inning, striking out one batter.

Up Next: The Tar Heels host No. 23/25 Notre Dame this Wednesday for an ACC doubleheader at 4 and 6 p.m. Chancellor Carol Folt will throw out the first pitch prior to game one.
