SB: UNC, NC State split doubleheader

Posted April 26, 2014

— North Carolina split a doubleheader with NC State on Saturday, dropping game one before claiming an exciting win in game two.

The Tar Heels moved to 23-24 (14-10 ACC) for the year as they celebrated Senior Day in front of a packed crowd of 1,287 fans, the second-largest attendance at Anderson Stadium.

The Tar Heels held a 4-0 lead and Lori Spingola had a no-hitter through five innings, but the Wolfpack posted five runs in the sixth to take over the lead for good. In game two, Carolina led 8-2 before another five-run inning closed the gap to 8-7, but Amber Parrish hit her second homer of the day, a three-run blast out center, to secure an 11-7 win for the Tar Heels.

After making a record-breaking 178th appearance with her start in game one, Lori Spingolawrapped up the win in game two while recording 12 strikeouts for the day.

"Game one was certainly disappointing, but I'm really proud of how we bounced back in game two," head coach Donna J. Papa said. "Amber Parrish was outstanding at the plate with clutch hits in both games, and Kendra Lynch had one of her best hitting days for us. It took a village of pitchers to get it done, but I'm glad we were able to come out on top in game two. Hopefully we can get them again tomorrow, but we know it'll be a fight for both teams."

Game One: NC State 7, UNC 5
Amber Parrish ripped a single to left to lead off the bottom of the second, and Stephanie Kridercame in to pinch run. After a sacrifice bunt by Erin Satterfield to move Krider to second, Kendra Lynch hit a double to left, driving home Krider. Jillian Ferraro was hit by a pitch, and Aquilla Mateenfollowed with a single through the left side to load the bases. Amy Nece was then hit by a pitch force Lynch across the plate to make it 2-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Jenna Kelly walked before Amber Parrish launched her 13th homer of the year, a two-run blast over the right center fence, to make it 4-0, Carolina.

In the Wolfpack's half of the sixth, Molly Hutchison singled to left to break up Lori Spingola's no-hitter. After Hanna Sommer was hit by a pitch, Leah Jones doubled to left to score both Hutchison and Sommer. Sara Lippard then singled to left and an error on the throw to score Jones and make it 4-3. Tyler Ross came in to pinch hit for Scout Albertson and launched a 2-run homerun down the left field line to score Hayley Stowe, who pinch-ran for Sara Lippard, to make it 5-4 Wolfpack.

Molly Hutchsion got another hit in the top of the seventh as she hit a two-run homerun over the left field fence to extend the Wolfpack's lead to 7-4.

After a leadoff double from Kristen Brown and a walk from Amber Parrish, Erin Satterfield reached first on a fielder's choice that allowed Brown to score on the overthrown ball at first, cutting the lead to 7-5 Wolfpack.

Lori Spingola made her record-breaking 178th career appearance in the game with 5.2 innings pitched. She surrendered four hits and five runs while fanning nine. Kendra Lynch pitched the final 1.1 innings, giving up two hits and two runs to NC State.

Game Two:

Amber Parrish drew a walk to lead off the second before Kendra Lynch hit her sixth homer of the year, a two-run shot down the right field line, to put the Tar Heels on top, 2-1. After Jillian Ferrarowas hit by a pitch, Tracy Chandless singled to left. A bunt single by Aquilla Mateen advanced the runners, and Ferraro came home on a throwing error by the Wolfpack to make it 3-1, Carolina.

Davis added a second solo homer out left in the third to cut the Tar Heels' lead to 3-2.

Carolina broke open the game in the fifth, scoring five runs on four hits to make it 8-2. Lynch led off with a single to left, and after Jordan Scarboro came in to run, Ferraro singled to shortstop. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Scarboro scored as Stephanie Krider reached on a fielder's choice. Krider stole second and then moved to third as Mateen hit a solid single up the middle and advanced to second on the throw as Ferraro came home. A wild pitch then scored both Krider and Mateen. Brown drew a walk and advanced to second on an illegal pitch before she came home for the fifth run on Parrish's double to the right center wall.

Kirsty Grant hit a solo home run out center to lead off the fifth. After Hanna Sommer and Leah Jones each singled, Sara Lippard drew a walk to load the bases for the Wolfpack. Tyler Ross came in to pinch hit and hit a grand slam out left, cutting the Tar Heels' lead to just one run at 8-7.

Brown and Kelly each singled to start the bottom of the sixth before Parrish hit her second homer of the day out center to pad the Tar Heels' lead with another three runs, 11-7.
