Raleigh, N.C. — NC State baseball evened the series on Chance Shepard’s solo home run in the seventh inning of its 1-0 win over Georgia Tech on Saturday at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The Wolfpack (23-19, 8-15 ACC) engaged in its second pitchers’ duel in as many contests with the Yellow Jackets (26-18, 12-11), claiming a 1-0 win one day after Tech opened the series with a 1-0 win of its own. Friday and Saturday mark the first time on record that the Pack has played in back-to-back 1-0 ballgames.
Shepard supplied the offense in a 3-for-4 game with his third homer of the year. The sophomore from Wilmington started the game 2-for-2 with a pair of singles. Kyle Cavanaugh and Brett Austin contributed the only other Wolfpack hits on the afternoon, each adding a single.
Jon Olczak (1-1) claimed the win by holding the Jackets to one hit over two innings starting in the seventh, striking out one. Cody Beckman collected his first career save by getting the final batter of the game to pop up to the mound.
Patrick Peterson started and limited Tech to three hits and three walks over the first 3 2/3, fanning four. His identical twin brother Eric Peterson relieved him and scattered four hits and a walk through the next three, punching out a pair.
Neither team mustered much of an offensive threat all afternoon, setting the stage for Shepard’s homer in the seventh. Shepard led off the inning, and drilled a full count pitch over the wall in straightaway center to provide the difference.
NC State returns to action for the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. on ESPN3.
