Shoulder injury ends Renner's season, career at UNC

— A shoulder injury suffered Saturday in a victory over North Carolina State University will end the college career of UNC quarterback Bryn Renner, the school said Tuesday.

“We are disappointed to lose a senior leader and a great teammate like Bryn,” said UNC head coach Larry Fedora. “He has meant so much to the Carolina program and I've enjoyed coaching him the last two seasons. He is one of the most prolific quarterbacks in school history and his contributions will be sorely missed.”

Renner injured his left, non-throwing, shoulder and will have surgery at UNC Hospitals Wednesday to repair a detached labrum and fracture in the injured shoulder.

Renner, a Virginia native, assumed the starting job in his sophomore season with the Tar Heels and has racked up 8,221 career yards passing. That puts him third on the all-time list behind T.J. Yates and Darian Durant. Renner is second only to Durant with 64 touchdown passes, and he is third in career pass attempts and completions.

Renner was injured on North Carolina's final drive in the third quarter of Saturday's 27-19 win. After he was tackled on a 5-yard gain, Renner immediately pointed at his non-throwing arm. After being attended to on the field, he left the game. Renner did return in the fourth quarter and completed a third down throw to TJ Thorpe to give the Tar Heels a first down.

That would be Renner's final completion and play of his college career. Tests have determined that he needs shoulder surgery, and he will miss the rest of the season, a university spokesman said.

WRAL will continue coverage Wednesday as Caulton Tudor looks ahead to who may fill the role as back-up for the Tar Heels.

    Will he still get paid?

Yep, the two Moo U players who both dove at Renner headfirst with their helmets with the dirty hit and injuring him should be kicked off the team. Ridiculous.

HATE this for Renner. Such a good guy, and what a lousy way to end his senior season. Wish him all the best, but this has got to really sting.

Tough way to go out. Good luck in the future.

Dirty hit? Hardly. Just a tough break. Btw, didn't he get put back into the game later on and finished the game out? So the coach risked further injury to him by letting him continue to play.

Think of it this way, which I know you already have, he won't be playing against Duke. I know you got to be happy about that.
Just one of the many cheap shot by NCheatStateU on Sat. Everyone can see why The Doorman doesn't like the targeting rule. So look out 903, they maybe targeting some of the duke players.

It's football.... injuries happen. The coach should have never put him back in the game risking further injury. NC State has lost several to season ending injuries this year too. It is a part of the game. UNC will be fine with Williams - he is a play maker with his run ability.
