The National Hockey League announced Monday that Hurricanes winger Jeff Skinner has been named the league’s First Star for the week ending Dec. 8.

Skinner, 21, scored five goals and earned one assist in three games as Carolina earned victories against the Washington Capitals, Nashville Predators and San Jose Sharks. The Markham, Ont, native netted his first career hat trick with three goals in the Hurricanes’ 5-2 victory against Nashville last Thursday. Skinner leads Carolina in goals (9) this season despite missing 11 of the team’s 30 games due to injury.

Selected by the Hurricanes in the first round, seventh overall, of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Skinner (5’11”, 200 lbs.) has totaled 73 goals and 75 assists (148 points) in 207 career NHL games. He appeared in the 2011 NHL All-Star Game, and won the Calder Trophy as the league’s rookie of the year in 2010-11.

Must we find a way to bash Eric Staal in every thread? I love Skinner as much as everyone else, and I'll even listen to an argument that he deserves the C, but #12 is NOT going anywhere and is NOT going to stop trying to win every night!! We all know that JR would replace the whole coaching staff before he'd trade Eric, so enough already! Nobody's giving him any credit when we win, so can we at least refrain from pointlessly sideswiping him while we're praising someone else?

Keep it up Skinner. I think Gerbe and his hustle lit a fire under some of the others. I'll never forget that fight Gerbe was in...looked like a Rock 'em Sock 'em robot...punched the big guy about 10 times before the big goon knew he was in a fight.

Agreed...the C on the jersey means nothing if actions don't back it up.
